- Itinerary Planning
Yes. Most of our tours are private: your group has its own vehicle and guide, whether you’re two people or seventeen. Because wine is personal, we plan the day around what you like to drink, often including smaller wineries you might not find on your own, and you set the pace. Larger groups, such as corporate events, can be split across several vehicles.
If you’d rather join other travelers, our Taste of Tin City Walking Tour is our public tour. You book per person, and it runs Saturdays at 10am: about 3 hours of tastings at Tin City wineries and a distillery, with a family-style lunch at Etto Pasta Bar. It’s 21+ and on foot, so transportation isn’t included.
Want the Tin City tour just for your group, or on another day? We also run it as a private tour.
It depends on how much help you’d like.
- Private guided tour: your own vehicle and a local guide who shares the stories behind the wineries and the region. Every private tour includes an itinerary consultation. For groups of 6 or fewer we also plan the full itinerary and make all reservations at no extra cost; for larger groups, full planning is $15 per person.
- Private transportation: a professional driver and private vehicle for a day you’ve already planned. You choose the stops, we handle the driving and timing. You can book online.
- Itinerary planning: we design your day and make the reservations, but you provide your own transportation.
- Hotel & tour packages: two nights in downtown Paso Robles plus a private tour, planned together.
Not sure which is right for you? Get in touch and we’ll help you choose.
On a shared tour, you join a group of strangers on a set route. The van picks up at several hotels, the stops are chosen for everyone, and the day runs on the group’s schedule.
On a private tour, the day is yours:
- Your wineries: we choose them for what you like to drink, including smaller, family-run tasting rooms. Many of them limit group sizes and don’t host shared tours.
- Your schedule: we pick you up at your door, at your time. Stay longer where you’re enjoying yourselves, skip a stop, or add lunch.
- Your guide: all of their attention goes to your group, your questions and your celebration.
- Your price: we price private tours by the hour for the whole group, so the cost per person drops as your group grows, to as low as about $65 per person for larger groups.
Shared tours can be a fun, social day out. If that’s what you’re after, our Taste of Tin City Walking Tour runs every Saturday.
You can visit Paso Robles wineries on your own, and many people do. With us, someone else handles the planning, the reservations and the driving, so nobody in your group has to stay sober to drive. Your guide shares the stories behind each stop: who makes the wine, how the region grew, and what to taste. You spend the day enjoying it instead of checking maps and tasting times.
We know wine, not just the roads. Our knowledgeable local guides bring Paso Robles wine country to life, sharing the stories behind the wineries, the region, and the wines in your glass.
Our private tours are personalized around your interests. We help plan your itinerary, make winery reservations, and take care of the details so you can simply enjoy the day. And because we don’t take commissions from wineries, our recommendations are based on what suits you, not who pays us.
Our guests have noticed. USA TODAY 10Best readers ranked Toast Tours #2 in the United States and the highest-ranked wine tour company in California in 2026, while Travel + Leisure included us among California’s top wine tour companies.
This is a trick question! There’s no such thing as a bad time of year for a wine tour in Paso Robles.
The best time to visit Paso Robles for a wine tour depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Winter (December – February)
If you prefer a more intimate experience with fewer crowds, winter is a great time to visit. While there isn’t much happening in the vineyards, winemakers often have more time to chat, and you’ll likely be able to get reservations at your preferred wineries and restaurants. Plus, hotels and vacation rentals are more affordable. However, be prepared for chilly weather and the possibility of rain.
Spring (March – May)
Spring brings mild weather and the vineyards start to wake up, with bud break adding a beautiful touch to the landscape. It’s a great time to visit if you want pleasant temperatures without the peak-season crowds. It’s also stunningly beautiful on the central coast with vibrant green hills with splashes of color everywhere from the wildflowers. However, the weather can be hit or miss, with some days being lovely for outdoor tastings and others being too cold, windy or rainy.
Summer (June – mid-August)
Summer in Paso Robles can be hot, but the evenings always cool off. This is when you’ll find a lot of events and activities, from concerts at Vina Robles to live music at various wineries. However, it’s also a busier season, so making reservations in advance—especially for groups and weekends—is essential.
Harvest Season (Mid-August – Mid-November)
This is the most exciting time of year in Paso Robles wine country. The vines are lush, the grapes are being harvested, and you can literally smell the fermentation in the air. Winemakers and staff are working tirelessly, so while the energy is incredible, wineries will be busy, and reservations can be harder to secure. October is Harvest Wine Month, with plenty of special events and celebrations, but be prepared for crowds and higher accommodation prices. The weather this time of year is usually ‘perfect’ – though it can get hot on some days.
No matter when you visit, Paso Robles offers a fantastic wine country experience—it just depends on whether you prefer a quieter, more personal tour or the lively atmosphere of harvest season!
Yes, our tours are designed for all levels, from beginners to connoisseurs.
In fact, a Toast Tour is one of the best ways to build confidence with wine.
Rather than navigating tastings on your own, you’ll have a guide who turns each stop into an easy, engaging conversation, no jargon, no pressure.
By the end of the day, you’ll not only have discovered wines you love, but you’ll feel more comfortable choosing and enjoying wine long after the tour.
It depends on the type of tour you book. For private tours, we offer door-to-door service and can pick you up directly at your accommodation. A pickup fee may apply for locations more than 15 miles from downtown Paso Robles.
For shared tours or transportation, we’ll do our best to pick you up at your preferred location whenever possible. However, this depends on logistics and group coordination, and in some cases we may not be able to confirm until the evening before your tour.
Please feel free to ask! We’re happy to work with you to find the best option!
For private tours we can visit any winery that’s best suited for your group.
Whenever we’re selecting the wineries on your behalf, we take the following into consideration:
- Smaller, non-touristy locations
- Warm & friendly service
- Quality wines that represent what Paso Robles does best
- Extra perks and experiences whenever possible
We try our best not to visit wineries whose tasting fees exceed $30 per person, though this is not always possible.
Absolutely! We offer a custom itinerary planning service for guests who want to explore wine country on their own but still want expert guidance.
Whether you’re driving yourselves, have your own driver, or just want help mapping out the perfect day, we’ll work with you to create a personalized itinerary based on your preferences, timing, and tasting goals.
This is a great way to get insider access to top wineries, avoid common pitfalls, and make the most of your visit, no vehicle booking required.
Yes! Our vehicle has plenty of safe storage space for holding your wine and other purchases.
Our vehicles have insulated bags with ice packs to keep your wine safe.
Children of all ages are welcome on the tour, unless noted otherwise, though drinking alcohol is not permitted for those under the age of 21.
By California law, any children under the age of 8 years old, as well as any children shorter than 4’9” must be secured in a car seat or booster seat. Toast Tours DOES NOT provide a car seat or booster seat, and it is your responsibility to provide this yourself. Children under the age of 8 years old will not be allowed on the vehicle if you do not have a car seat or booster seat.
Toast Tours welcomes well-behaved dogs on our private tours, and are happy to work with you to build your perfect dog-friendly wine country day.
Please keep in mind that dogs are not permitted to sit on the seats in the vehicle and must remain with their owners throughout the day and can not stay on the vehicle unattended. Any accidents or damage by the dog will be charged an additional fee.
We love dogs, but unfortunately, can’t allow them on our shared group tours, unless it is a service animal.
Yes. We are registered, regulated, and licensed by the State of California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
The CPUC requires commercial insurance, regular vehicle inspections, and compliance with strict safety standards as a condition of licensing.
All of our drivers are also regulated and must pass a pre-employment background check and subject to drug testing, as well as complete training to ensure safe, professional service.
Our license # is TCP38039A.
Unfortunately, no. It comes down to insurance, guest and employee protection, and we don’t feel comfortable offering a private driver only or “designated driver” service, hiring a driver for your personal vehicle or rental car.
In most cases, your personal auto insurance becomes the primary coverage. If that policy determines the vehicle was used for commercial purposes, paid transportation, or with a hired driver, it can deny coverage.
If you have a rental car, the service needs a TCP permit, and most rental agreements and the primary liability coverage included are intended for personal use. They typically do not cover a third party being paid to drive the vehicle as a commercial service, and the rental company itself usually prohibits using the vehicle for hire under the terms of the contract.
While some private driver only services state they are “fully insured,” this often refers to general liability insurance, which does not cover auto accidents, and sometimes Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) coverage, which was designed for incidental employee driving, not for businesses whose primary service is paid driving.
Drivers are also frequently independent contractors, which can further complicate responsibility if something goes wrong.
Rental agreements and the primary liability coverage included with rentals are intended for personal use. They typically do not cover a third party being paid to drive the vehicle as a commercial service, and the rental company itself usually prohibits using the vehicle for hire under the terms of the contract.
We have explored this option extensively, and while we do carry general liability insurance, it does not replace auto coverage, and we do not feel comfortable putting our guests or our drivers at risk in this scenario.
Instead, Toast Tours provides tours and transportation in our own fleet of comfortable, spacious, fully insured vehicles, driven by trained professionals and covered by commercial auto insurance. This ensures clear coverage, peace of mind, and a safer experience for everyone involved. Please reach out, we’re happy to help you plan the perfect tour.
Uber can be unreliable in Paso Robles wine country. Many wineries are tucked away on rural roads where rides are hard to find and cell service can be spotty. Getting to a winery might be easy, but finding a ride to leave can be a different story.
A private wine tour with Toast Tours offers so much more than reliable transportation. Your knowledgeable local guide brings wine country to life, sharing stories, explaining the wines, and connecting you with the people and places that make Paso Robles special.
We help plan your itinerary, make winery reservations, manage the timing, and adjust plans along the way so you can simply enjoy the experience. Your private vehicle stays with you all day, so there’s no waiting for rides or carrying wine purchases between stops. Your wine and belongings can stay safely in the vehicle while you taste.
Best of all, everyone can relax, enjoy the wine, and experience the day together without worrying about driving or logistics.
Already have your wineries picked out? Our private transportation service is a great option if you just need a professional driver and vehicle.
For beginners looking to learn more about wine, we recommend visiting a winery that offers a tour or guided experience. These can take you behind the scenes or dive deeper into specific topics like wine production, food and wine pairings, or tasting aged wines from their library collection.
With so many wineries to choose from, the best fit depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Would you enjoy a more elevated, luxury tasting, or would that feel overwhelming? While casual wineries can be a great time, the hosts there may not always have in-depth wine knowledge—so while you’ll enjoy a relaxed tasting, you might not get the deeper understanding you’re seeking.
If your goal is to learn more about wine while exploring Paso Robles, we highly recommend booking a tour with Toast Tours. We specialize in curating the perfect day based on your interests, ensuring you visit wineries that offer the right level of education and experience.
Plus, our knowledgeable guides act as your personal wine country ambassadors, helping you get the most out of your visit. They can walk you through proper tasting techniques, explain winemaking processes, and discuss everything from varietal characteristics to terroir, aging, and farming practices—all in a way that makes sense, no matter your starting point.
Most importantly, our guides create a fun and approachable atmosphere, so you can ask any questions without hesitation and walk away with a deeper appreciation of both Paso Robles and wine itself.
All while having an unforgettable day, of course! 🙂
Yes, many of the wineries we visit farm organically, biodynamically, or with a strong focus on sustainability.
In fact, Paso Robles has become a leader in regenerative organic farming, making it one of the most exciting regions to experience environmentally conscious winegrowing.
If this is something you care about, just let your concierge know, we’ll thoughtfully curate your day to highlight producers who are deeply committed to these practices.
There are advantages to both single-day tours and multi-day wine tours, so if you’re a first time visitor, you’ll have to decide which is the best fit for you!
Single-day wine tours are great for those who want a concise, well-rounded introduction to a wine region. They’re perfect if you have limited time, want to visit a few standout wineries, and prefer a more structured, efficient experience without committing to multiple days. A tour can also be the perfect way to start your trip since the tour operator or your guide can help make personalized recommendations for your other days in the area, so you can explore on your own but still find those hidden gems.
Multi-day wine tours, on the other hand, allow for a deeper dive into the region’s wineries, culture, and landscape. They’re ideal for those who want a more relaxed pace, explore hidden gems, and experience a wider variety of wines and winemaking styles. Beyond being more relaxed, they also maximize your limited time in the area. While they may cost more, you’re guaranteed to make the most of your visit and see as much as possible—perfectly curated to your preferences and interests.
If you’re in the area for several days and plan to be out exploring each day, a multi-day tour is a fantastic way to maximize your time. It allows you to experience a greater variety of wineries and hidden gems while leaving the planning and logistics to the experts—ensuring every day is seamlessly curated to your preferences.
However, if you’re only here for a short time, plan to return frequently, or want some downtime to relax between outings, a single-day tour may be a better fit.
Both options offer unique benefits depending on your goals and interests, so it’ll be up to you to determine what works best for you!
No set time. Some winery experiences take longer than others.
The average is about 75 minutes at each winery. We’ll spend a little longer at whichever of the wineries we enjoy lunch or if there is a tour.
Yes, if enjoyed responsibly.
However, please keep in mind that tasting rooms can refuse to serve intoxicated guests (even if you do have a driver), and that wouldn’t be a lot of fun!
Additionally, if a guest does become too intoxicated, they may need to be removed from the tour early, at their own expense.
Ultimately, we want to ensure that each tour is successful, with all the guests having a great experience!
Yes! We provide chilled bottled water throughout the day to keep you refreshed and hydrated. You’re also welcome to bring your own beverages, including alcoholic drinks, to enjoy along the way and can use our cooler with ice packs to keep them chilled.
No, lunch is typically not included unless noted otherwise.
We like to keep your day flexible, so you can choose what fits your mood, whether that’s lunch at a winery with a full kitchen or enjoying a relaxed picnic.
For picnics, you’re welcome to bring your own food, or we can arrange a fresh, boxed lunch.
Yes. Most wineries will provide the option of purchasing wine by the bottle or glass to enjoy with your meal.
No. You should expect to pay tasting fees at the wineries.
These fees are charged by the wineries, compensating them for the wines they pour for guests, and typically run about $20 – $50 per person, per winery.
Most wineries will waive these fees with wine purchase or wine club signup.
On average, wine tastings in Paso Robles cost between $20 and $50 per person, per winery. Some wineries may charge less, while others offer premium experiences at a higher price.
However, many wineries waive the tasting fee if you purchase wine — so your tasting becomes complimentary and you get to take home some delicious Paso Robles wines. Sounds like a win-win!
Yes. Most of the wineries on our tours will waive tasting fees for those guests who purchase their wine or join their wine club. It’s not always the case, so be sure and ask at each winery.
You are not required to taste at the wineries, and you will not be required to pay tasting fees for wineries at which you do not taste. There are a couple of wineries that are exceptions to this rule, so if this is your intention, be sure to ask your guide.
Yes. Almost any of the wineries we visit will allow our guests to share a tasting.
Transparency is at the core of our pricing, no hidden fees or added taxes.
Private tours are billed hourly, allowing your day to unfold at your own pace.
Before your tour, we’ll provide a thoughtfully planned itinerary and time estimate, so you have a clear expectation of the total. Your final balance simply reflects the actual hours used.
Shared tours are offered at a fixed per-person rate and paid in full at booking. For pickups outside our standard service area, a clearly communicated travel fee may apply.
We’ll also include a suggested gratuity for your guide, which remains entirely at your discretion.
Maybe! California has a strict DUI policy. After a day of wine tasting it is likely you will not legally be able to drive.
It takes the average person approximately 1 hour to metabolize one alcoholic beverage.
According to the California DMV, a driver weighing approximately 140 pounds, will be over the legal limits after 2 drinks, assuming that one drink is a 5 ounce serving of 12% wine. Many Paso Robles wines have a higher alcohol by volume (ABV) of 15% or higher.
If you have 6 tastings of 1.5 ounces each, that would be the equivalent of 9 ounces of wine, or almost 2 servings of alcohol. That means that one tasting may be enough alcohol to put you over the limit.
Even with tasting sizes being smaller than a glass, they add up quickly!
We advise people who drive in for the day to arrange other transportation home, or better yet, to stay at a local inn or B&B.
Check out our recommended Places to Stay.
The dress code is generally ‘Wine Country Casual.’
We recommend comfortable shoes for gravel or vineyard paths and layers, as Paso Robles temperatures can shift significantly between the morning and afternoon.
Read more in our blog, what to wear wine tasting.
Yes, there are a few great ways to get your wine home safely.
Many wineries can ship directly to your home, which is often the best option if you’re purchasing multiple bottles (depending on your state’s shipping laws).
However, if you’re buying just a few bottles along the way, or live in a state where shipping is limited, shipping can become expensive per bottle.
In those cases, if you don’t have a wine suitcase, we offer insulated, Styrofoam-padded wine shipping boxes that hold up to 12 bottles and are designed to be checked safely on your flight home. This is one of the most reliable ways to transport wine, as the protective inserts help prevent breakage.
Some airlines, including Alaska Airlines and Southwest, have programs like “Wine Flies Free” from select California airports, and many travelers also have free checked bags, making this a convenient and cost-effective option.
We recommend checking with your airline in advance for their latest baggage policies and restrictions.
Toast Tours is not responsible for any items lost or stolen on our tour or in the wineries.
Please take care to collect all of your belongings when you leave, including any wine or merchandise purchased throughout the day.
Any items left behind which are found can be returned to the guests at their request and expense.
Paso Robles is more relaxed, more varied and usually more affordable.
- Wine: Napa is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sonoma is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Paso Robles grows more than 60 grape varieties, from Rhône blends and Zinfandel to Cabernet and Italian and Spanish grapes, often all in the same tasting room.
- Cost: tastings here usually run $20 to $50 per person and are often waived with a purchase. In Napa, $50 to $150 or more is common. Hotels and dinners also tend to cost less.
- Feel: most wineries are small and family-run, so it’s common to meet the owner or winemaker. Many welcome dogs and families.
- Downtown: you can park once and walk to tasting rooms, restaurants and bars around the park.

Please submit a Private Tour Quote Request. We’ll check and confirm availability and provide a price quote promptly.
Whenever you’re ready. We welcome last-minute bookings, often even the same day, and we’ll always check what’s possible.
If you’d like the widest choice of dates and wineries, earlier is better. Saturdays fill first, and some of Paso Robles’ most sought-after wineries have limited tasting times, especially for groups. Most guests reach out about a month ahead, and larger groups about two months ahead.
For the best availability:
- Saturdays from spring through November, especially September and October: 6 to 8 weeks ahead
- Groups of 8 or more: about 2 months ahead, so we can secure wineries that host larger groups
- Fridays, Sundays and holiday weekends: 4 to 6 weeks ahead
- Weekdays and December to February: a week or two is usually plenty
Have your heart set on a particular winery? Mention it when you get in touch. The most popular ones are often the first to fill.
Tour group sizes often fluctuate. Give us your best guess. We are happy to work with you as best we can to establish a range of likely attendees and price the tour with that range in mind.
Depending on the day of the week and group size the hourly rate may change.
Also, keep in mind that vehicles have a maximum number of seats and wineries often have a maximum group size they allow.
All private tours include an itinerary consultation at no extra cost.
During the consultation, we offer guidance on wineries that will be a great fit specifically for your group. We can recommend wineries that will accommodate your group size, offer certain wine styles, have full-kitchens or allow picnics, are dog-friendly, offer tours or any other criteria you might be interested in.
We can also provide recommendations for timing & logistics.
After our consultation you can plan your itinerary and make all the reservations yourself, or I can plan the itinerary and make the reservations on your behalf for an additional $15 per person.
For groups of 6 guests or fewer we will make all winery reservations & plan your itinerary at no extra cost.
Read more about the difference between full itinerary planning and itinerary consultation here.
Absolutely! With our Private Tours, we’re completely flexible on where the tour goes and what you do.

Children of all ages are welcome on the tour though drinking alcohol is not permitted for those under the age of 21.
Please make sure you count all children in the total guest count, since we need to make sure there is space in the vehicle and at the wineries.
Yes, at Toast Tours we love dogs and welcome well-behaved dogs on our private tours, and are happy to work with you to build your perfect dog-friendly wine country day.
Please keep in mind that dogs are not permitted to sit on the seats in the vehicle and must remain with their owners throughout the day and can not stay on the vehicle unattended. Any accidents or damage by the dog will be charged an additional fee.
Unfortunately, we can’t allow dogs on our shared group tours, unless it is a service animal.
Yes, while wineries are primarily focused on wine and often have limited non-alcoholic options beyond water, we’re happy to accommodate non-drinkers.
If you let us know in advance, we can take this into account when planning your day and select stops that offer more variety where possible.
You’re also welcome to bring your own non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy in the vehicle, and most wineries allow these on their property.
Please note that outside alcohol is not permitted at wineries due to licensing regulations.
Lunch is not automatically included in your private tour, but we can provide you with a variety of lunch options to best suit your group.
When wine tasting, some of our favorite options include enjoying one of the high-quality winery restaurants, or enjoying a picnic lunch at a winery after your tasting.
You’re welcome to bring your own picnic items, or we can provide a delicious deli boxed lunch for $25pp. You can view the menu here .
This can depend on many factors, such as the number of stops visited, your pickup and drop-off location, the drive times between wineries, the number of guests in your group, if there is an experience such as a tour that takes longer than a typical tasting, etc.
Larger groups need more time than smaller groups, and on average you need more time at the wineries on busy days, such as Saturdays or special events.
Typically to visit three stops for smaller groups tours start around 5 to 5.5 hours and for larger groups 6 to 6.5 hours.
Private tours are priced by the hour for your whole group, with a 5-hour minimum, so the cost per person drops as your group grows. As a guide, a 5 to 6 hour tour for a couple usually runs about $475 to $650 in total, and larger groups can be as low as about $65 per person.
Your exact price depends on your group size, pickup and drop-off locations, tour length, distance traveled, vehicle size, included activities (e.g. Hearst Castle entry), itinerary planning, and the day and season of your tour. We’ll send a full quote once we know your plans, with no hidden fuel fees or taxes.
Prices don’t include gratuity, lunch, wine tasting fees or entrance tickets.
We recommend an 18% gratuity for your guide/driver and include it in proposals, but we never add it automatically. You decide on the day of your tour.
Deposit: a deposit of $200 or 20% of the total, whichever is greater, confirms your booking. Your date isn’t held until we receive it.
Lunch will be offered family style and will include a selection on pasta, paninis and salads.
We will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences, but since the lunch is family style this may not be possible.
Water will be included with lunch. If you wish to enjoy other beverages such as wine, beer, soda, coffee etc, you can purchase this at your own expense.
If you want to pick the specific wineries we visit then we recommend booking a private tour.

The best times of year for a wine tour along the California coast are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). These seasons offer the best mix of weather, vineyard activity and scenic beauty—especially if you’re planning to drive scenic routes like Highway 1 (if open) or explore wine regions such as Paso Robles or Santa Barbara along the way.
Spring (March–May):
- Lush, green vineyards and blooming wildflowers create stunning scenery.
- Mild temperatures and mostly clear skies make for ideal driving and wine tasting weather.
- Fewer tourists than in summer or fall, so reservations are easier to book, and lodging may be more affordable.
- A great time to explore Highway 1, as coastal fog is less frequent and visibility is better.
Fall (September–November):
- Harvest season (“crush”) brings energy and excitement—perfect for wine lovers who want to witness grape picking and production.
- If harvest has completed, you may enjoy fall colors in the vineyards, offering incredible photo opportunities.
- The weather remains pleasant, though the coast may begin to cool in November and evenings are chilly.
- Expect higher demand in general this time of year in wine country, especially during weekends, so book early.
Summer (June–August):
- Popular time to travel, especially for families—expect larger crowds and higher prices for hotels and activities, thought the wineries themselves tend to be a bit quieter.
- Coastal drives like Highway 1 can be foggy in the mornings (particularly around Big Sur and San Luis Obispo County), which may impact views—plan mid-day drives for clearer skies, though this is never guaranteed.
- Longer daylight hours and packed event calendars make it a fun and festive time, but you’ll want to book activities and lodging in advance.
Winter (December–February):
- The quietest season, with fewer tourists and discounted rates on lodging and activities.
- Ideal if you’re looking for a peaceful, slower-paced experience.
- Weather can be unpredictable, with possible rain and limited views along the coast.
- Some wineries may reduce hours or close midweek, so check in advance.
Driving Tips for Coastal Wine Tours:
- If you’re driving the Pacific Coast Highway, build in extra time for scenic stops and slow-moving traffic, and confirm that it is open. Rockslides close stretches of the highway frequently.
- Paso Robles is a perfect central stop between Northern and Southern California.
- Download Offline Maps for navigation since many areas have limited coverage.
In short, spring and fall are the sweet spots for wine touring the California coast—offering the best blend of wine country energy, beauty, and coastal charm, without the summer congestion or winter chill.
It’s a good idea to bring layers, since the coastal weather at San Simeon and Cambria can be much cooler than Paso Robles and there may be some fog in the mornings.
By the time we return to Paso Robles it can be very sunny and hot, with extreme temperature swings. So it’s also a good idea to bring sunscreen.
Wear comfortable shoes, as The Grand Rooms Tour is 60 minutes long and includes approximately 160 steps, both up and down, and a 2/3-mile walk.

“Hearst Castle – Building the Dream” is a movie that was produced exclusively for the Hearst Castle Theater. Breathtaking original cinematography combined with vintage clips and stills from the 1920s and 30s allows the construction and history of the Castle to come to life on a five-story screen.
This movie lasts 40-minutes and is screened every 45 minutes starting at 9:00 am.
This is the companion film to daytime Castle Tours and is included in the ticket price.
If you want to include time to watch this film, be sure to let your tour concierge know, since it will add about an hour to your overall itinerary.
That’s up to you!
Once your tour is confirmed, your Toast Tours concierge will discuss the various options with you.
Some favorites include dining at a seaside location while sipping wine and enjoying a delicious deli lunch or visiting the local charming town of Cambria, where you can choose to eat lunch at a local restaurant suited to your taste.
We can also head back over to Paso Robles Wine Country and dine at one of the many excellent winery restaurants located there.
So many great options!
Each Hearst Castle tour is approximately 70 minutes in length, but once you factor in the time to get up to the castle and come back down the mountain, visitors are typically at the castle about 2 hours total.
If you add the Building the Dream movie, you’ll be there closer to 3 hours.
The length of the tour depends on many factors, including your specific pickup/dropoff location and how many stops you choose to include in addition to the visit to Hearst Castle.

The easiest way to plan a wine tasting trip in Paso Robles is to work with a local itinerary planner like Toast Tours. We handle all the details: winery reservations, timing and logistics.
We’ll take the guesswork out of where to go, help you find the hidden gems that fit your taste and vibe, and make sure your day flows smoothly, winery reservations, lunch, timing, and logistics all handled.
It really depends on your taste and what kind of experience you’re after. Paso Robles is home to over 200 wineries, ranging from rustic, family-run gems to sleek, modern estates, including favorites like DAOU, JUSTIN, Austin Hope, Booker, Halter Ranch, and Tablas Creek. The “best” winery for you depends on your wine preferences, the kind of vibe you want, and whether you’re into big reds, crisp whites, Rhône blends, or something more offbeat.
Our concierge team selects wineries based on your taste preferences, vibe, and group size to ensure an unforgettable experience.
Yes! We specialize in planning Paso Robles wine tasting itineraries for bachelorette parties, birthday groups, anniversaries, and corporate retreats. We’ll handle logistics, reservations, and timing to ensure a smooth and celebratory day.
We recommend visiting 3–4 wineries in a day to allow time for tastings, food, and travel between stops. Our itinerary planning service ensures your schedule is relaxed and well-paced for maximum enjoyment.
Yes, you can absolutely explore Paso Robles wine country on your own! Many wineries welcome walk-ins or offer appointments for tastings. However, with over 200 wineries spread out across the largest wine region in California, and limited rideshare availability, planning ahead is essential.
If you want to relax, while gaining insider information into the region, winemaking, and more, and skip the logistics (like choosing wineries, timing, making reservations, and figuring out driving), a private tour can make your visit to Paso Robles smoother and more enjoyable.
If you prefer to drive yourself, and already have a designated driver, or a TCP licensed car service, with our itinerary planning service we can customize your itinerary to match your preferences and handle all the details, so you can just sip and enjoy the day.
While many wineries welcome walk-ins, most Paso Robles wineries strongly recommend or require reservations, especially on weekends. We’ll handle all the booking for you as part of our wine tasting itinerary service.
Our custom itinerary planning services cost $95 + $15 per person, and includes a personal consultation, a logistically efficient route based on your preferences, and full coordination of tasting appointments, special requests, and dining or activity recommendations. Yes! We can incorporate winery restaurants, picnic spots, or local lunch recommendations into your wine tasting itinerary. Paso Robles has fantastic food and wine pairings we love to highlight.
Trick question, there’s really no bad time to visit! The best season depends on the kind of experience you’re after.
Winter (Mid-Nov-Feb) is ideal for a quiet, crowd-free visit. Winemakers often have more time to chat, and you’ll find better rates on lodging. Daytime temperatures in winter are in general mild, but be ready for chilly weather and possible rain.
Spring (Mar-May) brings mild weather, green hills, and blooming wildflowers. It’s gorgeous and less crowded than summer, though the weather can be unpredictable. It’s lively, but busier, so book ahead!
Summer (Jun-Mid-Aug) means sunshine, plenty of events, and warm daytime temps, but thanks to Paso’s large diurnal shift, the heat usually only lasts a few hours, and wineries do a great job keeping guests comfortable with shaded patios, fans, or indoor spaces.
Harvest Season (Mid-Aug–Mid-Nov) is when Paso truly comes alive. The energy is unmatched, grapes are being picked, and October brings harvest celebrations. Just expect crowds, higher lodging rates, and limited availability without advance planning.
No matter when you come, Paso Robles delivers, whether you’re craving peaceful vineyard strolls or the buzz of harvest season.
Yes. We can coordinate private transportation for your wine tasting itinerary. Transportation is key to a safe and relaxing day in wine country. If Toast Tours can’t accommodate your transportation needs we’re happy to recommend trusted licensed and insured local transportation services.
Absolutely! We design personalized wine tasting itineraries for all group sizes, whether it’s a romantic weekend for two, a solo getaway, or a “bleisure” trip where you’re blending work and wine country. From corporate offsites to quiet solo escapes, we’ll curate the perfect day with your tastes, schedule, and goals in mind.
For weekend or holiday visits, we recommend planning your wine tasting itinerary at least 4 to 5 weeks in advance to ensure the best selection, especially if you’re hoping for seated tastings, popular wineries, or restaurant reservations.
Smaller groups and couples can often be more flexible, but early planning still makes for a more relaxed and seamless experience. For medium-sized groups (up to 8 guests), we suggest booking 5 to 6 weeks ahead, and for larger groups, it’s best to plan 6 to 8 weeks in advance to allow time to secure reservations and coordinate logistics.
That said, we’re experienced at handling last-minute requests and can often accommodate larger groups on short notice, we just like having a little more time to make it seamless and special.
Yes! We can help plan a multi-day or weekend wine tasting itinerary that includes a mix of wineries, dining, scenic drives, local experiences, and lodging recommendations for the full Paso Robles wine country experience.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxed two-day getaway or a longer stay, we’ll design a personalized plan that fits your pace and preferences.
