Meet the Legendary Ladies of Tin City

We’re excited to host our second annual Taste At Her Table Tour in celebration of Women’s History Month, and as part of the weeklong series of events for At Her Table!

This year we have created an exclusive walking tour highlighting & supporting some awesome local women & their businesses in the infamous Tin City.

Tin City is an industrial area just outside of downtown Paso Robles that is home to a community of innovative and passionate producers of high-quality wines, spirits, beer and more.

At the heart of this community are some amazing women who have built incredible brands that have elevated Paso Robles and helped shape Tin City as we know it today.

On this tour guests will get exclusive access to meet pioneers who helped found Tin City, as well as the new generation who are continuing to innovate and elevate. You’ll learn their stories and taste through their offerings at these iconic and up & coming brands.

At each stop your group will be personally hosted by the owners and creators, who will share with you their stories, passion and delicacies.

The tour itself will be curated and hosted by Kristina Horton, Owner of Toast Tours in Paso Robles.

  • Learn about the history of Tin City, taste natural wines and learn about their focus on Italian varieties, the importance of viticulture practices and much more! with Stephy Terrizzi at Giornata Winery
  • Visit Etto Pastaficio (Tin City’s very own pasta factory & Italian style market) & enjoy a family-style lunch at newly opened Etto Pasta Bar
  • Meet up & coming winemaker, Janie Willheim, as she introduces her boutique brand, Lumina Wines, and showcases her current releases in the heart of Tin City icon, Desparada Wines
  • Taste the elegant wines at Hubba Wines while owner/winemaker Riley Roddick walks you through her winemaking practices, the importance of sustainability and the path that led her to create her own brand

10:40am meet in Tin City – Kristina from Toast Tours will greet everyone in the heart of Tin City and start the day with introductions, as well as a brief overview of what Tin City is and how it all got started.

Your Host for the day:

Kristina Horton is no stranger to travel and after graduating with a B.S. in International Relations & Diplomacy, she moved to Barcelona Spain where she began managing a busy bike tour company and fell in love with tourism. She lived abroad for 5 years and has spent many more months traveling around 6 continents, often visiting wine regions.

After discovering her passion for wine while working in Napa & Sonoma, she knew that Paso Robles was where she wanted to call home and build her own company, Toast Tours. Named by Travel & Leisure as one of the Best California Wine Tours for Learning, Sipping, and Sightseeing, and recently voted as the Best Wine & Beer tour in North SLO County, we’re excited to host guests on great experiences that go beyond the tasting room.

11am – 12:15pm Wine Tasting Italian Varieties & History Lesson with Stephy Terrizzi

Step into the working cellar of this boutique winery focusing on high quality handcrafted Italian varieties, and the second winery to exist in Tin City.

Stephy Terrizzi will host your group and talk about her focus bringing obscure Italian varieties into San Luis Obispo county, on sustainable farming and building the Giornata & Etto brands from humble beginnings in (at the time) little known Tin City.

She’ll guide our group through a tasting of elegant, naturally made, old world style Italian wines and talk about their winemaking practices, including the use of amphorae, and the unique varieties they grow & produce.

Your host:

Stephy Terrizzi is a viticulturist with years of experience and training, focusing on sustainable farming and building healthy soil in the vineyards. She is known for planting Nebbiolo, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Friulano and Ribolla Gialla – all from the same clonal material as the best vines in Italy – that thrive in San Luis Obispo County.

Stephy travels to Italy regularly to study Italian varieties, wines and viticultural practices, which helps them create wines that lean more Italian than Californian, favoring wines with balance and subtlety rather than intensity and extraction.

Her research on Italian grape varieties is legendary, and she consults and mentors other local growers and teaches classes – and loves sharing her passion and knowledge with everyone!

12:15p – 12:30p Walk over to Etto Pastificio and learn how a viticulturalist and winery owner became a pasta maker!

After our tasting, Stephy will walk us over to their newest projects, Etto Pastificio and Etto Pasta Bar, and share the story of how they started their own pasta factory here in Paso Robles, created a traditional style Italian market and how Tin City has become home base for all their brands.

With a focus on quality organic ingredients, traditional Italian equipment and production methods, their pasta is a not-to-miss experience!

12:30p – 1:15p Family Style Lunch at Etto Pasta Bar

Cozy up with your new friends and enjoy a family style meal that includes a sampling of Etto’s healthy and delicious pasta, as well as a selection of gourmet panini sandwiches and delicious salad, all made with local, seasonal ingredients.

There will be vegetarian & non-vegetarian options.

Still and sparkling water is included, but additional beverages can be purchased during the lunch, if desired.

1:15p – 1:45p Meet up & coming winemaker Janie Willhelm from Lumina Wines and sample her current releases.

After our lunch we’ll meet with winemaker Janie Willhelm who’ll walk us into the heart of where she produces her boutique brand, Lumina Wines, in the cellar of Desparada Wines, another popular Tin City winery.

Emphasizing the community spirit and support given within Tin City, Janie will pour her small-production wines while sharing her story with our group.

Your host:

Janie Willheim’s first vintage of Lumina Wines was a single barrel of dry Riesling in 2019.

Since one of her favorite wines to drink are Rieslings, it was only fitting that this was her first wine!

Though she is new to having her own brand, she’s not new to the industry. Janie graduated from Cal Poly SLO’s Wine program with a concentration in Wine Business in 2015. She has worked at Daou, Manresa, Krinklewood (Australia), Kukkula and is now at Desparada in Tin City, Paso Robles.

She’s added a couple new wines to her lineup, including a Counoise and a Valdiguie, and focuses on working with biodiverse vineyards that are practicing regenerative farming practices.

1:45p – 3p Walk to visit Hubba Wines for a Winery Tour & Tasting with Riley Roddick

Learn about Riley’s experiences working internationally and locally at elite wineries before starting her own brand here in Paso Robles, and what it has been like to begin a woman-owned/operated winery in Tin City.

She’ll take us into her production facility where we’ll learn about her focus on making wines with minimal intervention, sourcing from vineyards that farm sustainably, what motivates her with her winemaking and her plans for the future of Hubba Wines.

Your host:

Riley Roddick’s journey as a winemaker spans all corners of the world and her wines are a reflection of a myriad of influences, education, and experience.

Riley received a degree in Ag Business with a minor in Viticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and earned her Master’s Degree with the Vinafera Euromaster program, while living and working in Montpeyroux, France and in Udine, Italy in the heart of the Friuli region.

She has worked in all aspects of the business from the tasting room, harvest production to vineyard work at such prestigious wineries at L’Aventure, Torbreck Winery in Barossa Valley, Australia, Domaine d’Aupilhac in France and as the assistant winemaker for Law Estates and Desparada Wines.

Riley’s wines are a reflection of all of these influences and her desire to create wines with intention, meant to be shared with family, friends and whatever the day may bring.
